A podcast is an audio or video digital file, released episodically, which can be streamed or downloaded from the internet and played on either your computer or mp3 player.  The term was originally derived from 'ipod' and 'broadcasting' and was added to the New Oxford American Dictionary in 2005.

Podcast n. a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar programme, made available on the internet for downloading to a personal audio player.

Podcasts are short shows, similar to radio or TV episodes and are differentiated from other web audio or video files by the way they are delivered.  You can either download a podcast individually or choose to subscribe via RSS feed.  Subscribing to a podcast allows your device (i.e. computer) to automatically check for and download any new updates or episodes posted on the internet.  These can then be viewed and enjoyed when you want and where you want.

Other terms used:  webcast | vodcast | vidcast | mobcast
